FRUSTRATING WEEKEND FOR TINMOUTH AT KNOCKHILL

Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship

Round 6 – Knockhill

 3-5 July 2009

Its been a busy few weeks for Britain’s fastest lady, Jenny Tinmouth, setting new female lap records on the famous mountain circuit at the Isle of Man TT and competing in the Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship. Over the last weekend she was competing at Knockhill in Scotland, the only time the series ventures outside England. During what proved to be a difficult weekend, she overcame several technical issues to finish in 23rd position overall, and 7th of the British Supersport Cup competitors, leaving her in 9th position in the Cup standings.

The weekend didn’t get off to the best of starts, Tinmouth encountering a slipping clutch only three laps into the first free practice session. Mechanic Steve Bradley soon had the problem cured and Tinmouth took part in the afternoon’s free practice with no such problems to report, other than being a little frustrated with herself, and her times, as she was effectively a session behind everybody else due to the earlier problem.

Over the two qualifying sessions on Saturday, Tinmouth put in numerous laps, to try and gain those extra fractions of a second, which makes all the difference in what is one of the most competitive classes in the British Superbike paddock. However, just over ten minutes into final qualifying, Tinmouth’s engine blew, trailing a plume of smoke for a short while before realizing and pulling off the circuit. As she was dismounting there was an impressive burst of flame for a second or two, proving that Jenny really does light up the series! With the session red flagged to inspect the track for oil, it was game over for the day, and she would end up in 28th position on the grid for the following day’s 24 lap race.

Steve, her mechanic would have another long evening preparing the bike for the race, a job he got stuck in to straight away, and within a few hours, the bike would be ready for action, just needing a run out in the morning warm up to check things over.

With no problems reported, Tinmouth would line up on the grid for round seven of the highly competitive Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship. Once underway, the race ran at a hot pace at the front, James Westmoreland setting a new lap record onboard the Triumph, in the leading group. Further back Tinmouth was settling in nicely and would lap faster than in any of her practice and qualifying sessions earlier in the weekend, taking the chequered flag in 23rd position and seventh of the Cup competitors.

Speaking to me afterwards she said:

“It’s been a bit frustrating this weekend, with a few technical issues hampering us at times, particularly the engine giving up in Q2, but it had worked hard for me at the TT so I can’t complain too much! The race itself was quite hectic as always, but I managed to improve my times and score some more points in the Cup, so let’s head to Mallory Park in a couple of weeks and see what we can do as it’s a circuit I’ve always liked.”
