Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship

Round 7 –Mallory Park

 17th-19th July 2009

Ellesmere Port racer, Jenny Tinmouth has recently contested round seven of the Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship, at Mallory Park in Leicestershire. Riding her sorrymate.com entered Honda CBR600RR, she rode maturely in difficult conditions to finish in 19th place overall, and fifth of the cup competitors, moving her up into seventh position overall in the cup.

Tinmouth quickly got into her stride in the first of the free practice sessions on the Friday, just half a second shy of her personal best in the morning run. The afternoon was going well too, shaving a few more tenths of a second off her lap time, until she had a fall at the bus stop chicane. Unhurt, she returned to the paddock, and along with mechanic, Steve Bradley, assessed the damage to the bike.

The following morning, the machine was fixed and ready for Tinmouth to take to the circuit for the first of the two qualifying sessions. She made excellent use of this and put in a fastest lap, almost a second quicker than she had ever gone around Mallory Park, with a time of 59.046 seconds, averaging a speed of 85.96mph around the tight 1.4 mile circuit. This was good enough for a position on row seven of the grid in 25th place. In the final qualifying run in the afternoon, she was slightly slower, so remained on row seven of the grid for the following day’s race.

For race day, unfortunately the weather changed part way through the day, with race control electing to give the riders an extra ten minute practice in the wet conditions, prior to the race, since they had not ridden in wet conditions at all over the previous two days.

Once lined up on her grid position following the short practice, the choice of which tyres to run was a gamble, due to the changeable weather and the condition of the track. Tinmouth made a last minute decision to exchange her wet weather tyres for intermediates front and rear, as the circuit was drying, with the prospect of a full dry line developing during the race.

As the race began, Tinmouth made a decent start, maintaining her position in the opening laps, and later in the race becoming involved in a battle with MAP Raceways Yamaha rider, AJ Venter, and fellow cup competitor Robbie Brown. As the race progressed, she would momentarily lose the front on the brakes into Edwina’s chicane while lining up Venter, which cost her time, and also had a moment at the hairpin in the difficult conditions. Shortly after she had to yield to the race leaders, but managed to bridge the gap to Peter Ward, who was running full wet weather tyres, and struggling in the drying conditions. She managed to move ahead on the final lap, to take a well deserved 19th place, and importantly some valuable points in the cup, finishing fifth, and moving up to seventh overall of the cup competitors.

Reflecting on her weekend, Jenny said:

“Overall we had a good weekend. We had a few dramas with me crashing on Friday afternoon, and with the last minute tyre choice on the grid, but it all turned out ok in the end. I’m pleased to have picked up some handy points in the Cup, and I’m really looking forward to the next round at Brands Hatch!”
